Making Career Decisions: Facing the Fear

When we think about making a change, one of the first obstacles we face is fear. We might fear failing, making the wrong decision, what others may think of our decision or how it may impact them. Before we let our fear spiral out of control, we might want to take a closer look – fear can actually be the key to your success!

Most of us are pretty complex beings with a keen instinct about fear. We can easily distinguish between the “there is a fire, I should find a way out” fear and the “I am venturing into the unknown” fear.

For most of us, our career options will fall into the second category – however our anxiety will make it look like the first!

From Success to Wine, It’s All in Your Head

This week, while taking a break from back up files and calling credit cards companies, I read Wine’s Pleasures: Are They All in Your Head? by The New York Times wine critic, Eric Asimov.

The article is a great take on what motivates the wine shopper. Asimov explores why we are compelled to purchase expensive bottles of wine. He cites a study conducted by The Wine Trials and featured in “The Wine Trials,” a soon to be published book by Fearless Critic Media. The study revealed that

…a $10 bottle of bubbly from Washington state outscored Dom Pérignon, which sells for $150 a bottle, while Two-Buck Chuck, the cheap Charles Shaw California cabernet sauvignon, topped a $55 bottle of Napa Valley cabernet.

Asimov offers that perhaps your wine shopping motivations are often all in your head! I found, in a strange way, parallels can be drawn to your career decisions!

Sometimes Your To Do’s Find You

There are some To Do’s that somehow always end up at the bottom of the list. You know, the little things you have been meaning to handle, yet manage to evade endlessly. Well I have news for you…sometimes, your To Do’s find you.
