Making Career Decisions: Facing the Fear

When we think about making a change, one of the first obstacles we face is fear. We might fear failing, making the wrong decision, what others may think of our decision or how it may impact them. Before we let our fear spiral out of control, we might want to take a closer look – fear can actually be the key to your success!

Most of us are pretty complex beings with a keen instinct about fear. We can easily distinguish between the “there is a fire, I should find a way out” fear and the “I am venturing into the unknown” fear.

For most of us, our career options will fall into the second category – however our anxiety will make it look like the first!

Next time you find yourself stopping because of fear, try my personal Facing the Fear Strategy:

  • Find the Fear. Your first step is to determine the source – identify the fear. Dig deep to really understand what is at the core.
  • Ask the Question. If you are afraid of failure, ask yourself What could make me fail? Could I prevent it? How could I prevent it? What would I do if I did fail? Keep asking and answering the questions…and if you don’t know the answers, enlist help!
  • Face the Fear. Use the answers to make a plan of action. Take a step outside of your comfort zone and into the unknown. Each action removes a bit of the fear and replaces it with knowledge.
  • Keep Moving. As you move forward, you will build momentum and begin to spot opportunities to stretch further.
  • Look Back. Move at your own pace and make sure to take time to reflect on what you are finding! As you look back, remember the intensity of your fear at the outset. Take stock of your movement, recognize your strength and courage.

Whenever I find myself immobilized by fear, I stop and look at the story I am telling myself about the situation. I get down to the facts and I start to ask questions.

Now, what questions do you need to ask to get yourself in action?
